November’s Salon, Feet on the Ground: Encounters with Scotland will be presented by MSc Publishing students at Edinburgh Napier University.

For this highly anticipated Literary Salon, students Becca, Emma, Giulia, Hannah, Lidia, and Lydia are taking over  hosting duties and presenting an all-Scottish evening.

In honour of Saint Andrew’s Day, this event will celebrate the traditions and stories from student writers, locals, and visitors to Scotland. Original works will be read aloud, and those in the audience will also get their chance to share their stories. Do not worry if you are unable to attend in person and would like to participate, you can still join us on Zoom, and we will be happy to share your work!

Our prompt is simple: On St Andrew’s Day, you wake to find the ordinary world feels

touched by ancient stories, old symbols, and a hint of the fantastical. Write a 250-

word tale that explores this sudden shift.

Combining our passion for literature and writing, we hope to honour beautiful Scotland and Saint Andrew, even if he never set foot in Alba.

As usual the Outhouse are hosting us, and we will be in the upstairs Function Room. As we are doing a slightly different 'presentation' the timings have changed a little to allow more time for interaction.

There will be drinks available for purchase, and plenty of time before the presentation begins. We will open the Zoom and present prompts at 6.45 and will start our event at 7.15pm. Online attendees are welcome to hang around in the zoom for more informal chatter, which we can monitor. We’ll continue to mingle and chat, and if anyone has information to share, we will happily give you the floor.

How it works:

6.30pm: Doors Open – reception in the Function Room at the Outhouse

6.45pm: Open the Zoom meeting, hand out prompt

7.15pm: Welcome Guest Authors

7.45pm: Audience Participation

8.00pm: Notes of Interest; Mingling and chat

Registration can be found on Eventbrite – it is free to register for all of our events.

Sadly, we are unable to offer a glass of wine on arrival, but we hope to re-continue this tradition in the future.

Tickets are available from Eventbrite, both in person and online, and do not forget to register as a participant if you would like to submit your work to be read on the night! NOTE: places are limited to a first come, first served basis as not everyone will be able to present their work. Sign up as soon as possible!

We encourage people to buy us a coffee to help fund our work. If you can’t afford to donate, you are still welcome. Our two anthologies are on sale here, and books will be available to purchase on the night.

We look forward to seeing you in person or in the Zoom room, and to reading or

hearing your short stories!

Accessibility Notice

Edinburgh Literary Salon is open to all those with an interest in all aspects of Literature, whether professional or personal, and to all parts of the industry: writers, publishers, booksellers etc. All are welcome, and events have free registration. While we aim to hold some events at accessible venues, our regular salon is in an upstairs room at The Outhouse. For this reason, we aim to livestream most events. If there is a problem accessing zoom, we will do what we can to assist. We strive to ensure adequate audibility, and straightforward registration. We invite positive feedback on how we can improve, even within our limitations as a non-funded organisation. We welcome open conversation.
